Warriors 24 - Parowon 0
In Saturday's match up between the Snow Canyon Warriors and the Parowon Rams defense was the name of the game. Coach Stover had his 6-2 arrangement dialed in as he held the home team to negative yards giving the Warriors it's first goose egg of the year. After being down 8-0 in the first half and then having a stalled series to open the second, the Ram's became one dimensional, needing to rely on the pass to try and make up lost ground. But the Warrior front 6 were able to keep pressure on # 19 forcing several hurried throws and also getting 3 sacks for major losses. Mention worthy names for the Warrior defense are Tucker Lamoreaux, Johnny Chalmers (even showing up late), Josh Miller, and Dillon Fizer. However on Saturday every player on the Warrior squad had an opportunity to contribute...and did, putting an exclamation point on our commitment to the concept of the team.
On the offensive side of the ball field general and Warrior QB Austin Staheli led Snow Canyon on an unusually pass heavy attack. Staheli was 4 for 8 in passing with 86 yards in the air added to 26 yards on the ground plus a 17 yard kick return and a 26 yard INT giving him the leading stats with 156 yards. But Austin made every on count with one touchdown by foot and one in the air.
Seth Smith with his usual explosive running style drew the majority of the attention from the defense. He was able to rack up 73 yards rushing on 8 attempts and had a 5 yard kick return, but was unable to find the end zone. His key blocks and threat on the ground opened up the passing attack for his team mates.
Zach Stover had a break out game with 3 catches for 41 yards (it should have been more but a HORRIBLE spot from the officials negated his 5 yard catch for a first down that ultimately stalled the drive) . He also made the crucial block that freed Austin Staheli for his touch down run. Stover, as one of the defensive captains was also a major factor in the shut out performance by the D.
Josh Miller made a dramatic entrance being less than fashionably late along with his side kick Johnny Chalmers. Josh wasted no time getting active on the defense, rushing the Ram's QB and causing several hurried throws. It took a little longer to warm up on the O, but eventually he did pulling in one catch for 35 yards but got brought down just short of the goal line. That set up Taylor Hill for his second TD of the contest.
Taylor Hill spends the bulk of his time blocking big, BIG defensive ends, protecting Staheli. But on Saturday he was transformed into a clutch scoring machine. With only 2 rushing attempt for 2 yards and one catch in the flat for 10, Taylor managed to score 2 touch downs. Again, major props given to the Warrior O line for making that possible.
Dallin Bergen is becoming know as Mr. Automatic as he came into the game, cast and all, and knocked down 3 P.A.T for a total 6 points. Those points and that leg will be crucial as the season continues and the competition stiffens.
Overall a solid performance by the Snow Canyon 8th Grade Green. The Warriors will face off against DH this week. Hopefully tailback and middle LB Zack "Fergy" Ferguson will be able to return. The Warrior's will need to be firing on all cylinders to have success against the perennial powerhouse. There is plenty to work on but we will take just a moment to enjoy the win!
GO WARRIORS!!Ram
